Author Stephen Covey would often use an exercise in which he placed rocks in a jar. The purpose of the exercise was to demonstrate that one must begin with the big picture items or risk getting lost in details and minutia. In the exercise he would begin by placing large rocks in a glass jar. He would then ask the audience if the jar was full. The audience would enthusiastically answer “yes”. Stephen would then dump a container of pebbles into the jar, filling the spaces between the large rock. Again he would ask if the jar was full. The audience was beginning to catch on and would give mixed responses. Then He would add sand and finally water and the audience would agree that the jar was full. The point of the exercise was to demonstrate that one must begin with the big picture items or risk getting lost in details and minutia. This example has relevance to the topic for the Berthoud Chamber of Commerce
Lunch and Learn - Details Matter - Knowing Your Numbers.
The ultimate measure of business is in dollars and cents. But just like the large rocks in Stephen Covey’s exercise, various size categories (rocks) are established to give meaning to the dollars flowing through the business.
