TOPIC: The Non-Profit Brown Bag Lunch 'n Learn - Nonprofit Employee Resilience - the importance of self-care. Jan Dowker is a former nonprofit executive with extensive experience in nonprofit management and operations, financial planning and strategic fund development, grant management, media relations, strategic partner and issues management, and promotional writing. She has over 35 years of experience working in leadership, management, politics, and government affairs for public, private and nonprofit organizations. Jan is the former Executive Director for Berthoud Habitat for Humanity, serving for over 6 ½ years in that role. Her responsibilities included the professional leadership of affiliate activities to achieve the charity mission of building homes in partnership with Berthoud residents in need of adequate housing. She managed all operational and administrative duties including financial planning, compliance with Habitat for Humanity International, grant management, acting as a Qualified Loan Originator for BHFH in working with applicants and partner families, fundraising, development of community and regional partnerships, and overseeing daily operations for the affiliate. Jan served as director of public relations for S. Robert August & Company, Inc., of Colorado, and worked for Michigan Senate Democratic Leader, John D. Cherry, Jr., the former Lieutenant Governor of Michigan. She also served in numerous legislative and political capacities with the Michigan House Democratic Caucus, Michigan Senate Democratic Caucus, and members of the state legislature. She has worked on political and ballot initiative campaigns throughout the United States, including California, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, New York, and New Jersey, serving as a consultant, political director, campaign manager and field manager. Jan has been involved in improving the local schools as a member of the Berthoud Schools Fund Board of Directors, serving as Secretary in 2009-10. Jan is also the former chair of the marketing committee for the Berthoud Economic Resource Team (BERT) and was involved in working to enhance the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver?s philanthropic arm, The Homebuilders Foundation (HBF) through the media relations efforts of the Public Information Committee, as well as production of videos to tell the HBF story in how the building community gives back to families in need.
